About

BODYROK FiDi Studio in the Financial District is a Pilates studio with reformer classes. Alexa is the instructor most often praised: one reviewer describes her clear cues, her modifications for easier and harder versions of each movement, and classes that challenge both beginners and advanced students. Narissa is praised for checking every student's alignment. Reviewers describe the instructors as cheerful and attentive, and the front desk as warm and welcoming. Reviews are mixed on the business side. Two reviewers describe problems with membership billing, including charges after cancellation, and one says they could not access the app. A first-time reformer student says the class offered little explanation for beginners, and that the instructor demonstrated moves only with hand gestures. One review feels the programme is not particularly body inclusive.

I attended this class as a first-time reformer Pilates participant, and unfortunately it was a very frustrating experience. The biggest issue was that there was very little instruction for beginners. The instructor briefly named the different parts of the reformer, but never explained what they were for or how they worked. As someone completely new to the machine, simply hearing the names wasn't useful. Several first-timers around me also appeared confused. The instructor also demonstrated movements from the floor using only hand gestures instead of showing them on the reformer itself. Reformer Pilates is not intuitive, and expecting first-timers to translate hand gestures into the correct body position on the machine simply doesn't work. I spent the entire class looking at other students and trying to catch up because I was never confident I was using the machine correctly. The pace of the class made this even more difficult. The cues came one after another at a speed that felt more appropriate for a cardio class than Pilates. My understanding is that Pilates is about control, precision, and spending time under tension. When the instructions are rushed and the music is fast-paced, it encourages people to move from one exercise to the next instead of performing each movement with intention. The tempo of the class didn't seem to match the purpose of the workout. More broadly, the class felt designed for people who already knew the reformer. There was very little coaching on setup, positioning, breathing, or common mistakes. An instructor's role should be more than calling out exercises and offering motivational phrases. Especially for first-timers, clear demonstrations on the reformer, corrections, and explanations are what build confidence and make people want to come back. I think BodyRok has a real opportunity to improve the first-time experience. The introductory class is when people decide whether reformer Pilates is for them, and investing more effort into beginner instruction would likely improve retention significantly. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling frustrated rather than excited to continue with reformer Pilates. As a result, I won't be returning.

Highly highly recommend BODYROK as a Pilates studio if you are a Pilates newbie or Pilates princess 😭. Cici at the front desk is so warm and welcoming and all the instructors are so great at making sure you get at least 1% stronger each class.
