Trivāra Pilates is a newly opened Pilates studio in Scarborough focused on the reformer. Reviewers describe a bright, minimal, spotless space with Merrithew reformers and plenty of room between machines, and classes kept small enough that nobody bumps into a neighbour. Beginner reformer and foundational flow classes are said to suit first-timers while still being a workout, and instructors are praised for close attention to form and cueing. Christine's classes are singled out as fun and engaging and leave members sore. A cardio jumpboard class runs a few times a week. Newcomers mention a thorough orientation at the front desk and an easy booking platform. The criticisms: small classes fill up quickly, one member finds the pricing higher than other studios, and one regular describes a class where an instructor's handling left her feeling embarrassed.

Clean, intimate, beginner-friendly
I have been attending classes at Trivara for the last six months. I had always had wonderful experiences with Trivara and all their staff who are lovely and pleasant. However, I attended a class on October 4th, at 12:30 PM with instructor Sandy Lam, that left me feeling humiliated and disappointed. The class started as usual, with the normal warm-up and breathing exercises. During the middle of the class, I began experiencing some difficulty doing one of the exercises and comprehending the instructions. I am not sure if Sandy thought that this was a helpful way to approach the situation, but she came over and started mocking my posture, dramatically slumping over towards one direction and loudly exclaimed "don't make your body like a snake!" At first, I laughed because I took it as a joke and brushed it off, but it became awkward fairly quickly when she did this a couple more times. She repeated again, not to be "like a snake". This time, to my two other classmates as well, drawing attention to me and making me feel uncomfortable.I realized that it was not a joke when she came over to do it again for the fourth time, stopping in front of my reformer to mimic my posture, swinging her body to the left and slumping over in an exaggerated way in front of my 2 other classmates and making sure that they saw, loudly announcing that I keep doing it wrong. After she stepped away from my reformer, she really drove the point home by taking her position at the mirrors in front of the entire class to dramatically slump over again and again, saying "DO NOT DO IT LIKE THIS!!" while looking at me. Once or twice is a joke, but the additional times she did this were unnecessary and felt mean-spirited and meant to ridicule me. This is extremely immature behaviour from an instructor and the conduct she exhibited is totally inappropriate towards another person, much less a student in your class. At some point, it was becoming unbearable so when she approached me again, I spoke up and told her I was clearly having difficulty following along. Her yelling and mocking clearly was of no help as well, because I still did not understand how she wanted me to adjust my posture after all those times. After I communicated this to her, she talked back rudely and asked me if I am here to learn. There is a clear difference between correction and coaching somebody versus being antagonizing and mocking a student, which is what she chose to do to me during the class. I have done over 10 classes at this studio. I know that I am not an expert in Pilates, hence why I stay in Foundational Flow. I also understand that I may require adjustments and correction for some exercises. However, I have never had an instructor ever treat me so disrespectfully before when providing me with feedback throughout the class. After I contacted Trivara directly about my experience; Tee, the co-founder, reached out to me. She apologized and ensured me that Trivara always tells their instructors to be encouraging and positive, even while adjusting or correcting a student. However, she said that it could have been that while the instructor was working, she did not realize that this is how she came off and that this was not the intention. While I appreciate giving instructors the benefit of the doubt, the behaviour was too persistent and exaggerated to be an honest oversight. Tee offered me 1 class credit back to my account to make up for the experience and said she would talk to Sandy. While I appreciate this gesture, this experience was deeply uncomfortable and humiliating enough for me that I will not be returning to the studio. Because Sandy was a last-minute substitute, it highlighted a concerning gap in consistency and instructor standards that can hopefully be addressed in order to maintain the normally positive and welcoming atmosphere of this studio.
I came for a class with my wife and was super impressed with the studio. It's a beautiful space which motivates you to show up for yourself. The instructor paid attention to the details and was attentive to the different levels of each person. I would definitely come back to this studio to improve my mobility and control in a beautiful space!
My friend and I both purchased the 3-pack reformer intro class and we had our first class today with Sammy. She was absolutely amazing!! Can’t wait to come back for my remaining classes!! I really hope this studio joins Class Pass!!
