About

JP Centre Yoga in Jamaica Plain is described by reviewers as a warm, welcoming studio with open, lovely rooms and a wide range of classes and teaching styles, including Iyengar and heated classes. Teachers are called talented and experienced, and several reviewers speak of their care for each person's health, comfort and safety. Beginners say the classes are approachable, with options to progress and no pressure to keep a particular pace, and one says they feel welcome here in a way they did not at other studios. Members describe a positive, client-centred community. One reviewer found it less vigorous and disciplined than the classical asana practice they were looking for.

Unfortunately not for me :( I really like this studio’s warm and welcoming vibe, and I like the facility a lot. However, I don’t know whether it is the style of teaching predominantly found in Boston, but I have been trying to find a studio that is more vigorous and disciplined with more of a focus on classic asana and creative and intelligent sequencing. I moved back to Boston after many years in Hong Kong and I find that most studios here, including JP Centre yoga (I have tried Soma in the North End, Core Power, Down Under) focus so much time on what I can only describe as warm-up drills and less on actual vinyass flow with classical Ashtanga or Hatha postures. Instead, students are often cued to do things like straighten and bend legs in reps , rotating the shoulders again and again in reps (these are only examples). I sadly find myself disassociating during class and thinking about other things, and there are very very few arm balances or inversions ever cued, even in classes that are Mixed Levels. They are almost never taught or used as peak poses either. I’m sure students would find it exciting to start some of the more advanced poses and could try some easier variations as well. It seems the only classes that cue these are Hot classes, but I can’t ever seem to find classes that are intense but not heated.
