Puppy Sphere | Puppy Yoga (DC) is a puppy yoga venue in northwest Washington. Reviewers describe a class that combines a short yoga session with time to play with puppies, with staff who are kind, attentive and organised, and who make sure everyone gets photos and time with the puppies. Several say they felt less tense afterwards, and one booked it as a surprise birthday gift with a quick check-in and waiver. Some visitors had a worse experience. Criticisms include puppies urinating on the mats in use, a late start, a strict ten-minute late policy, no signage and poor parking, and some guests keeping the puppies to themselves.
Welcoming
Cute concept, but unfortunately the cleanliness really took away from the experience for me. I love dogs and have had plenty of puppies, so I completely understand that accidents happen. What I didn’t really think through beforehand was that the puppies would be peeing directly on the yoga mats we were actively using. The staff did clean the accidents quickly, but it still felt pretty unsanitary, especially because the room itself smelled noticeably like urine. The puppies also didn’t feel as clean as I would have expected for an experience where they’re climbing all over people and their mats. My other disappointment was that the session was advertised as featuring mini schnauzer puppies, which was specifically why I booked that date, but we ended up with Rottweiler puppies instead. They were still adorable, but I do think guests should be notified if the advertised breed changes. For the price and the way the experience is marketed, I expected the overall environment to feel much cleaner and more polished.
Not a good experience. Is it just a thing for puppy yoga to be a scam? I came to see the miniature schnauzers and I’m happy I got to. But 1) they started late and said we weren’t going to do yoga but you could come back to do yoga. Respecting time doesn’t work like that. I paid for it to be together 2) they don’t set norms and so some people hog puppies when there are fewer puppies to humans 3) they “provided drinks” aka 4 cans of soda that they pour like a teaspoon of into a cup 4) one of the employees doesn’t seem to know how to handle dogs and “jokingly” made one puppy have a time out, honestly looking more aggressive than needed. They won’t know how to handle puppies. Then 5) I ask where they come from and if they’re adoptable they just said “I don’t know.” They treat these puppies like they’re “for hire” types, like you invite a clown to a children’s party. And for $60?! What a scam!!!
I secretly booked Puppy Yoga for my girlfriend’s birthday and just gave her the address with zero context. She showed up having absolutely no idea what she was walking into. When they told her it was puppy yoga she immediately lost her mind with excitement. Check in and the waiver process were super quick even though I made the reservation for her. She said it was smooth and organized and they got everyone through fast so the puppy chaos could begin. Then the stars of the show arrived. Normally there are about 4 to 6 puppies, but the day she went there were THREE eight week old mini schnauzers and one slightly older 15 week old one. Absolute cuteness overload. Trying to focus on yoga while tiny schnauzers are running around is basically impossible. At one point a puppy was just sitting in the middle of someone’s mat like it owned the studio. Another one kept climbing on people mid pose. Safe to say the yoga productivity level was low but the serotonin levels were extremely high. What stood out though was how organized everything was. They did a really good job making sure everyone got equal puppy time so no one felt like they missed out on the snuggles. They also handled the inevitable puppy potty breaks really well and kept everything clean the whole time. There was plenty of time to actually try the yoga if you wanted, but also zero judgment if you just spent the whole class petting puppies. Final rating from her was a solid 15 out of 10. Yoga may or may not happen. Puppy happiness definitely does.
